Seems like one of the hardest parts is getting you kicks warm and beefy. I use a dbx compressor I insert into the channel and I tune down my kick samples (mostly 909) in the mpc. What techniques do you all you???

experimenting with layering like they mentioned b4... sometimes i start from a "drum" sound i made using an analogue synth or something with alot or some punch and/or dirt... then i'll add below a more fat one, and less bright bd sound, play with the volumes, timing and eq if needed... that's something i do now and then. bd doesn't HAVE to be "fat" or big by law btw... if the track needs it it's fine, sometime a too fat bd is getting messed up with the bassline and such... when it's needed, go for it.

I am noticing that I am making more of the kicks I use now with a lot less decay. I think I am going to try the layering thing. I was told in the past that was not a good thing. But in the articales I have read recent I hear more people talking about that technique.

one thing i do is run the kick through a parametric EQ and then through a compressor

you can dramatically change the character of a kick sound this way and i like the flexibility because you can adjust the settings on both the EQ and compressor as you continue to work on the song to keep the kick sitting the way you want it in the mix as you add and change other elements

use two similar kicks. take one of those kicks, lessen attack, detune, add resonance, and move back a few clicks from the first kick. fuck around so you can feel it in your chest.

Thanks for all the advice. I actually took a 909 kick and layered it witha korg kick that sounded like a real kick. Adjusted the attack, added a little compression and the new kick sounded awsome. I think one of my problems was over compressing the kick..

There are various ways as already mention- layering for example. Layer several kicks, even double the same kick, or layer a kick with a bass sound or other types of sounds.

I'm prefer to just find a good sound to begin with. If you do that, there's not much else to add other than minor embellishments-EQ, compression, etc.

Once you have your rough kick sound duplicate it so that you have the same kick on two seperate tracks(il call them kick 1 and 2 ), then use a parametric eq on "kick 1" to cut all the high end and give a bit of a boost to the mid and bass. Now take "kick 2" and use a parametric eq again, only this time you need to increase the high end and cut the mid and bass. When both tracks are played together you should have a nice fat kick drum. ;)
