Recording sound on my ibook from a external music player (Tape, CD...)

I use Peak 1.6, but the recorder always give me a bad sound, so bad I even don't recognize the original.
I use imic, that plugs on my usb and give me an in and out. But Peak is not working well...

Do you have any idea for fixing Peak, or a freeware that would record music in wav or aiff ?

Thanks as I would really like to record voices, real instruments, and sample some records...
