BAM BAM BIRMINGHAM
The last time I deejayed in Birmingham was in 1983, at one of the highly memorable Powerhouse All-Dayers, which were then the focal point of the Midlands black music scene - the Powerhouse being a state-of-the-art club (like Wigan Pier and Legend), with great sound and lighting (and the first writing laser I can remember seeing!).
I’ve strong links with Birmingham, resulting from the wonderful support I used to get from the people that travelled up the M6 on a weekly basis to attend my club nights. Apart from being well clued-up musically, Birmingham had some of the best dancers in the country during the Jazz Fusion period, including Bulldog, a legendary figure on the scene back then. When Electro-Funk became the dominant musical force in the North-West, The Powerhouse All-Dayers and Nottingham’s Rock City would subsequently spread the vibe throughout the Midlands.
With this in mind, my appearance at Bam Bam present Outback next Saturday (at The Rainbow in Digberth) takes on an extra dimension from a personal perspective. I’ve heard that there might be one or two old-schoolers in attendance, which would be really nice.
From all accounts, Rob J and the Outback crew have done a great job in successfully launching what I’m informed is a rare underground night in Brum, and with Jigsaw going from strength to strength throughout recent times, things are definitely looking up for the second city.
Hope some of you can make it along on Saturday – early arrival recommended as I've been told a full-house is expected.
