View Full Version : All the colors of...TRAX
Maybe this topic has been already posted but I have to know about this again: was there any reason because the same Trax 12 inch came out with different label colors? I mean, which was the first pressing color of a 12 inch? I have Jungle Wonz - the jungle - on RED Trax, but I saw GREEN and also BLACK copies...same is for Marshall Jefferson - move your body (RED and BLACK). Were they later presses or what?

Good question,
I was told the black ones are ltd. similiar with the green. I remember 80's red, but red has also been the colour of re-presses.
Can anyone confirm the ltd. story ?

Chicago and met a guy who used to work
for DJ International. He told that usually
the black labels were first pressings.

The one I have had since day one was the old fashioned Red one. Has anyone else got any more solid information on this colour thing.

DOH !
Picture of Adonis (above) looks like an old trax except for the barcode which my eyes missed.
So there is no definitive answer to Trax colours except Blue didn't appear back in the day ? <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Placid:

The definite way to tell an original from a reissue is by looking at the bottom of the label. If it was pressed by PRECISION records, it is an original. If it was pressed by CAP IMPORTS, it is a reissue.
As for the the issue with the color labels, my understanding is that L. Sherman was cheap and whatever was lying around was up for grabs. The lack of quality vinyl pretty much reinforces this theory. Blue WAS used for some earlier pressings. My Sweet D pressing of 'Thank Ya' is in blue. Hopefully this clears some things up. Peace!

Still a bit of confusion, but thanks magic_juan, the precision cap imports helps.
So Trax can be
Black
Blue
Green
Red
White
Orange
?
But Red is the colour we mostly remember.
My Thank ya is Green.

Trust me on this one,
Larry Sherman's explanation that he used whatever was on hand, was very accurate.
While the only dealings I actually had with Larry was when I had him press an acetate (test pressing) of Jack Trax...while I watched him very closely, I visited his plant many times with different people.
Everytime I went there I was amazed at what a pig-stye it was. There was no order whatsoever. It was truly amazing that he could find people to work for him, let alone actually produce sellable goods.
But he did, and I digress.

BTW, "Sweet D" was actually me and Danny Wilson (from Full House, "Communicate").
Long story short, Danny needed some cash, I threw the tracks together, and he added some additional keys. We sequenced everything, threw it straight to a 1/4" reel and added in some truly goofy vocals while it was recording.
Danny took the tape to Larry...I didn't want my name associated with Larry Sherman AT ALL.
Also note, I never saw ANY money from the record.
Talk about a ONE HOUR RECORD.

All of the Trax records that I have are red.
I just bought an original sealed copy of No Way Back by Adonis and it was red.
C-
one i'm hunting for is the light blue label of Sweet D: Do Do It.

Most of mine are red exept for Jack Master Funk "Jack the Bass"(Black) and Jungle Wonz "The Jungle"(Green). Now I do have my favorite comp,House Hallucinates. Remastered by who else but the bassmaster himself,Herb Powers Jr! I was so annoyed with the bass fading in and out on "Acid Trax" till that comp came out on Vendetta records. That Maurice single came out on Vendetta as well. I was always confused about that. I guess it was one of those Sherman buisiness deals with A&M records. Peace,Walter.

C-Chris,the original No Way Back is black. You have a second run pressing. The first release I remeber being red is Ride the rythym.I actually have a copy of the Jungle that is black.I also have the green one. That also was the first pressing color.
Most early Trax releases were black. The early pressings had the Trax logo sideways.

Most of my Trax collection are represses, except for Jungle Wonz "Bird In A Gilded Cage" (white label with red writing) and Virgo "Free Yourself" (black label, white writing).
A question: did Trax ever issue promo copies, or was management too cheap? It would be hard to tell if you had a real "white label" with Trax, wouldn't it?

I think most original pressings are red, but the paper quality is cheap compared to the represses. I also have a few originals that seem to have 3 or 4 labels on top of one another. What was that all about? I won't even go there concerning vinyl quality ....

Naw Marbil,if you got them when they came out,you have originals.Anything after 88,is repressed, that's concerning the classics.
The first red label I can recall would be Adonis-We're rockin down the house.

That first virgo trax with a blue background and grey letters. This was just beat tracks. Was this a trax release or something else?? It never had a label name on it.
