Let me just say this....y'all are gonna want to book flights to this here party....Timmy wants to see all his peeps at once and he is pulling out all the stops......
Trust me when I tell you there is gonna be a HUGH special Guest that night.....bigger that who you just thought of....if you thought of that guest, it's bigger than that.
You are gonna want to go through Nyc-SHELTER to get to WMC-Miami.

also...while all these dj's can most def. handle long sets, and in fact that makes it pretty damn desirable...i'm sure all of them will be there the whole night...and how about a dream night being all these cats just building a night off of eachother.

This sounds like a hell of an event so before i book my flight I wanna know if the police are cracking down on the clubs like they are here in Chicago. I would be real pissed off if i come all the way there and the police shut it down just when Timmy starts letting them have it.

I have a guess as to who the special guest will be. I highly doubt it's a dj, since I don't think there are dj's out there who are any bigger than those who are already on the line-up. So, I assume this is a singer with initials SW. ;)
gabriel
03-06-2003, 06:57 PM
i think the special guest is SASHA!

if the special guest is sasha my name is john the baptist.

hi john smile.gif
that would be very weird.
i wonder who would disintegrate first, the crowd and the sudden sasha record coming over the speakers or him in the face of the vibe.

I would hope that this event is going to be documented in some way. Yeah, there are going to be some "wondrous" and even "royal" guests (RUMOUR HAS IT)....The DJ list ALONE is enough to put down a REAL VIDEO/AUDIO HISTORICAL document. Is this being done? If not...perhaps someone should speak to TR and see if he can pull some Dreamworks strings and get this thing preserved now. The performance clearances can come later.....

I've been thinking about this a lot. Now that the cat is out the bag on the guests and all, this is going to be the most crowded room we all have been in in a long, long time. I know that the place has multiple rooms.
Do you - ROB or RAY know if timmy and kevin have any intention of opening up the lower space typically reserved for hip-hop functions? With all these head expecting to get on the decks not to mention all the people I am anticipating (some people have posted indicating they have booked flights!!!!!!) it would be a good idea.

Lil Ray, Tenyu, Shalewa - help a Sista out... i'm stumped on this one, Leslie. i'd love to see all the performers but since they come on so early in the night there's going to be way too many people there, and seeing how Robbi's birthday went i'm afraid the entire crowd will stay late as well especially when everyone catches wind of Stevie... i'm thinking the best time to go is as early as your stamina allows so that you're still able to dance to say about 5pm on Sunday

The party last Sunday -- with the special touches of Joe Clausell -- was simply MAGICAL!! If it gets any better than that, they better have a defibrilator up in da spot 'cause I don't know if my heart could take a higher level of excitement!
I hadn't planned on coming out because I'm still high on the Love that was generated last week (seeing Timmy on the dance floor was sooooo cute!) and the space to express ourselves was very lovely. I can't imagine being able to get my s*#t off in a sea of bodies, packed tightly together, STANDING on the dance floor. (Big Sigh) I remember nights like that at the Garage waiting for Grace or Chaka or the Colonel; Larry would be WORKIN'IT and all you could do was sweat to a 2-step. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
The things we do for this music we call House... few know the sacrifices, even fewer understand our calling... hail.gif

Partied from 2am til 5pm. Went through two completely soaked outfits. Am on a major endorphin high right now but a crash is probably only moments away... I will leave the fancy details to other folks as I am not all that coherent right now I'll just share some random impressions...
There were so many people there at 11a that it looked like 3-4a on a typical weekend...Raul Midon was a a revelation. Miami bound folks do not miss the "Elements of Life" Live party-- stratospherically high SBSI...The heat was such that I saw a bald brother with steam coming up off of his head and the mirrors in the bathroom were fogged over...Claussel blew my mind-- I felt SPIRIT come into my body and to go and sit down for a minute to regain my head...Spinna had T. Regisford tripping the light fantastic...I owe Tyrone Francis a big graemlins/remybussi.gif for knowing how I needed to hear "Lamentation(You Son)"...Shelter family can DANNNNNNCCCCEEEEEE!...DHP family good looking out ( thanks for expediting the coat check processing process Musica and for lending a Shoulder YoRel)...It is good to see folks you ain't seen out in a minute ( graemlins/cheering.gif great to see you LoveDawn and Quinsessa)...and last but not least, wise women remember to pick up ear plugs...

In fact, it was way, way over the top...Shout outs

Slammin...Some highlights:
</font> Lil Ray getting on the mike after Fk's set and getting Timmy Regisford to say a few words. Priceless.</font> Right after Timmy's "speech", his dropping of a what seemed like 15 min track that Joe Clausell did called "Obatala". Insaneness. Joe crept over to the crossover and ripped that record to shreds. The organ player on this track is out of control.</font> After Timmy's relatively short set, he introduced" Shelter's own Lil Ray". Ray proceeds to drop "Macho City". Crazy. Skipworth and Turner and Esther Williams were also hightlights of his set. After his set he proceeded to break the mixer. HAHAHAHHA</font> Mia Friday comin on after Ray and droppin a dope-ass version of " People Make the World Go Round"</font>
Also special to me was all the knowledge of records in the booth at one time. Spinna, Sting, Timmy Regisford, Kim Lightfoot, Herb Martin, The Rare Radio cats, Francois K, Jamison . So you know there was a lot of nerdy 12" talk goin on.
This night was defintely special. DHP definitely represented. Shouts to all that were there including the out-of -towners like the Canos, Shadrach and Dorian.
Good meeting Cleo. Konbit and Matthew J were in the house . Lovedawn, Sha-Rock, MAria/KElvin, PK, Liberian Girl, Kayo, Keith Porter, etc.

Hahahaha! I was in the bathroom debating whether I should go with my sisterfriends to lunch and chat when Mia dropped Marcus Miller's live version of People Make the World Go Round. Tea Party represent! "Oh my god, I have to see what Mia is doing" I screamed when I ran up the stairs only to look up in the booth and see it was Mia rocking the house. Got grabbed up into C.L.E.O.'s family photo (C.L.E.O. you got a rare and precious document when you got PK in a photo, treasure it...lovely to meet you) so I missed dancing to most of the record but did get to catch the last part of introduction of the musician at the end which is sooooooo funky. That felt good. I am sure I will be playing this CD in class this afternoon.
One other random moment of wonderfully revelatory juiciness, Keith "I am grown now" Porter ;) , managed to get by through all of the morning and most of the afternoon doing the DJ thing in and around the booth, bopping his head, tapping his toe and talking shop. It took Spinna's round two introduction of "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" to pull him to center flor but during the spoken introduction here comes Keith jogging to the center of the floor, pausing a moment to stretch and letting those moves go. That man can dance and it always pleases me to see him getting down.

I am still very high from it all. I had not been in the spot for a few months and say what you want about it; it satisfies a need in me that no other place can simply because of the music, the crowd, and the vibe.
Keith Porter, thank you for stopping me and saying hello. Lil Ray glad I got to see you, I saw someone else and I cannot remember who it was and I apologize.
While I was there, all I could do was think back to the 2nd anniversay party I went to with a dear friend of mine who is no longer here and I couldn't believe here it was 10 years later and while the venue has changed the party is still going strong and I felt her presence with me the whole time I was in there - It was important that I be there for that reason alone.
Byron Stingley sang "More than Reality" and I thought I would lose my mind....

Classic Night indeed! Got there @ 3AM and the Shelter Membership card actually worked. Didn't have to wait on the line that was damn near on 5th Ave.
Raul Midon was excellent, excellent excellent. Highlights Louie coming back nearly 5 hours later to get his cd book he left in the booth. **Spinna, Sting and Lil' Ray ripping the classics. Sting was on the decks, Spinna on the pioneer effects box and little ray selecting the "chunes"
** The 12th year Compilation compiled by Timmy Regisford. Will have track listing soon
**Tyrone Dropping the infamous BKNY "All," Edit. Damn there was so much more.

Wow.
The energy in that whole damn club was just unbelievable. It was truly overwhelming at times. Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like everyone had this look on their face like "I can't believe this is all happening all around me". A truly unforgettable night. I DJ'd at BANG from 10-5 and then went straight to Shelter and danced for damn near 8 hours. Afterwards I went home and slept for 15 hours. Danny Krivit's set was deep in the classics as usual. Spinna ripped it - played some remix of "Music and Me" that had everybody trippin'. Francois started out with some kind of slow jazz song and then went straight in to dancehall, which had everybody screaming. It was very surreal to see an entire dancefloor that had been straight jacking for 12 hours to all of a sudden switch to 60 bpm speed. He started with "Boneman Connection" which he seemed to stretch out forever with the "diseases" riddim dub. He was doing some weird mad proffesor-type shit with the effects box. He even played "Master Blaster Jamming". It was a perfectly timed break in tempo that gave everyone's legs a chance to recover for a moment. I was so elated all night (day actually) that a lot of it seems almost like a blur. "Expansions" sounded great. Somebody played "Peace Pipe", which I almost never hear in a club. Surprisingly, I didn't hear tons of songs which I consider current Shelter hits. I mean, yeah I did hear some, like "I'm Doin' Fine" (I lost my mind) and "Days Like This" (the ENTIRE crowd screamed the lyrics), but it seemed like every DJ really pushed themselves to play a whole set that would be guaranteed to be completely different from anyone else's. I know DJ's always want to do that, but this was different. It was a whole other level of DJing skill that I've never really witnessed all in one night (day). Big respect to all the DJs that played and Robbi for putting together a truly historic event. At one point I went up to Robbi to thank him for such an amazing night and he said "Hey, you're the DJ for Al-Quaida!"
Oh yeah, gotta thank Tenyu for giving us all a ride in his pimp-mobile. Nice to hang with too. Peace.

Glad you broke down francois k's set, that was him not JOE. He also palyed Pat Metheny which ****ed w/ a lot of peoples heads. Still, I wanted to see how Francois played seeing that he really doesn't hangout in the shelter.
I believe he truly programmed his set out and did fine skipping record and all. Then he threw on " With out me," damn gotta find this track on vinly.
Spinna dropped "Peace Pipe," felt like a lot of Booklyn joints played througout the night.
good to see all the familiar faces in the house
Kim Lightfoot, Serge, The other Timmy, Tamoko, Carlos Sanchez, Orion, Matty Matt, Keita, Jon form Lazy-Boys (UK), Sanyu, Tenyu, Caroline, Keith Porter, Quentin, Nef, frank (Subliminal), Julian and Company, Ian Friday, Ariel, Louie, Mr.V, Joe 667, PK and the list goes oon and on and on...

I don't know how you do it.
Sunday morning was my first visit to SHELTER...(my first time in NY, in fact). I was hoping to make it in as early as possible and stay as long as possible, but things didn't work out and I was only able to make it to the spot at around 7am. Now, I've heard and read numerous stories about the SHELTER, so I thought I would be prepared for what the morning was going to be like... but damn!
I can't explain the experience of walking up those stairs and just being punched in the face with that heat, that movement and that SOUND. Unbelievable. It felt so comfortable and inviting...
I thought that because I arrived so late and missed the 'peak time' I would just be cathing the tail end of a party, but the strange thing was that the whole time I was in that building it was like dancing on the cusp...
I don't know how you do it.
The music that was played and HOW IT WAS PLAYED was nothing short of magical... I've never heard a group of people play records (and the system) like that... That floor was made for dancing...
I guess I was a little premature... I tried to hold out as long as I could, but people in my group started to fade, and I started to fade. I ended up leaving at 215pm and I was spent. I should have taken more breaks from the dance floor, but I couldn't help myself...
I'll know better for the next time...
Lil Ray, it was nice to see you again, and it was great chatting with you Robbi. Next time, I'll be sure to get my t-shirt early!
THANK YOU SHELTER

i just woke up an hour ago after crashing hard at 7pm yesterday. i started the night at 4 heading over to 667 thinking the place would be empty with everyone at the anniversary but the place was jumpin with Julian 138 on the wheels. He even called 'last song' so people would get out. hahaha. then i went to his pad for the first time and couldn't stop salivating over his records, seemed like 10,000 plus. phew! so we headed to shelter in my 'ex'-pimp-mobile and got there around six and still waited 15 minutes in line. i was wrong about Stevie but no pasa nada because i called the time, 5 muthaphuckin pm! It was strange to see the place packed with people i've never seen before but by noon there was actually space to dance. i got a kick seeing people start drinking beers around 3, hardcore. right when i thought everyone was too tired and the music was slowing down, Tyrone slams the club with guthrie's it should have been you and candi's when you wake up tomorrow... then near the end Timmy plays As and the whole place just flipped out. classic.
special shout out to George and Cheri who met at shelter 12 years ago
and to Mitsuru for pulling a 24 hour shift

2 days is not enough time to recover from this party in time for Miami. Man, I am completely worn out.
It was definitely a great night. But to be fair, I have to point out one negative: until about 5, it was so packed that there was no room to dance, which was frustrating considering the great music being played. Also, it was surprising that during all of the live performances most people were just standing, as if the fact that "So Greatful" is being sung live, instead of coming from a record, means that dancing is no longer an option.
Oh, and nothing sounds more horrifying than the sound of a skipping cd booming over the Shelter speakers, and this happened not once... graemlins/scared.gif
so who was the "special guest"?

I was at a Clark Kent gig once. He was cutting shit up ridiculously with two breakbeats. He had one record come in off-beat and everybody started jeering. He stopped the music, got on the mic, and challenged anyone in the audience to step up and DJ better than him. You could hear a pin drop in that joint.

Unforgettable! Joe was KILLING it on the crossovers. François took shit to a whole new level with that "Star Suite" acapella all echoed out...though he kinda lost me with the hip-hop and dub. But Spinna brought shit back up to speed, and Timmy made it feel like home.
Amazing. It was still packed at 1.30pm!

Woooooooooooooooooooooooweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeee what a party!!!!! At 8am I had my own little line to deal with when I got there and after about 10 minutes was able to rush up the stairs cause I heard Danny was on the decks, I only got a chance to hear him play his last record and then Joaquin got on. Danny you got the best smile in the house papa!
I sent my friend up to the booth to find out the name of this record JC was playing and as Timmy said its called Obatalá, wonderful, wonderful record with a really big organ in it, he had played his remix of Awade the week before, way up there folks, I hope they will both be in the stores soon. You know I have witnessed his magic many, many times at B&S but I have never been this close to the booth before. The way the Shelter is configured the dance floor is more concentrated, he was playing Spiritual Insurrection, all you saw was arms straight up in the air, every single body jumping up on the same beat. There was this little stage thing set up in front of the booth packed with people on it, all of them jumping up there right in front of the DJs, I mean for those behind the decks it must have been surreal….he has an incredible way of focusing everyone’s attention on the moment, every single body in there losing it at the same time. It was too much for me, I had to stop, find a wall to hold me up and absorb it all for a minute….
Spinna came on and gave us quite a measure of funk. He got down and I just loved it when he dropped God Made Me Funky, And he’s the one who dropped In Pursuit of the Pimpmobile from the Truck Turner soundtrack later on that morning, what a record, you go Spinna!!!
FK came on after that and I personally enjoyed the way he brought down the tempo, I really needed it right then. Those of you who were asking before how to play reggae in your sets, FK gave a very good demonstration of how its done. He dropped an R&B/hip hop record the name escapes me right now and as others have said he followed up with Nicodemus – Boneman Connection and then Stevie’s Master Blaster which has a very raggae feel to it. He did go there with the effects a little later on and was that a drum-n-base record? Now I really didn’t think the highlight of my morning would come from FK, but ya’ll when he dropped Use it Up, Wear it Out by Odyssey, well I was livin’ for it! Go FK!
Other highlights for me:
Ray is introducing Timmy, “Timmy’s gonna say a few words now so everybody turn off your tape recorders”. Hysterical, for real, he got such a roar from the crowd! THANK YOU maestro, we are gonna “continue doin’ what we’re doin”!
Getting Freddie to let me come back in after going out to buy a coffee at 2pm, “cause I really need it Freddie! I needed that fix!
Getting my CD signed by the maestro! I’m so corny…
The heads playing, Tyrone Francis, Lil Ray, Mia Friday and I caught big John up there too!!! I left at 5pm happy as a pig in shit and you guys contributed to my night just as much as the headliners, much love to you for sharing your talent!
Big hello to the DHP heads that I ran into, Dawn, Tenyu, C.L.E.O, TOT, Shalewa, PK, Marci, Kat, Sanyu (nice to meet ya), Musica, Herb Martin, Serge, Keith Porter, Kayo, Matthew J., Frank and Toni Cano, sorry if I missed anyone. Sorry to have missed Leslie, 138 and Konbit!

Yeah, s(*& was tight aight. Had to work in the erl afternoon and I was so spent I could hardly stand. Didn't get to bed til7 anyway. Too bad Stevie didn[t play. Who was the mofo in teh kniow who clearly stated on this here board no less that the special guest had the initials SW? That guy ought to get an award for mis-representation. I think that actually packed teh house more than it would've otherwise. Someone else mentioned B&S doing that a few times only to let people down with someone else. I ehard that Raul sang, but Inever even put 2 + 2 together enoug to think that he was actually the special guest.
Julian - nice touch. Julian's crew - it was super nice to meet you!!
To George "Coke Head" Bush - get real ya punk-ass!!!

who played "I Got That Feelin'" By Two Tons Of Fun? That thumping electro-bassline shit had me open... The breakdown in the middle gets a crowd amped everytime!

I am truly at a lost for words (but I'll try). :D It is Tuesday afternoon right now at about 12:50 p.m. and I am just really able to muster enough energy to type (seriously)!
I got to the Shelter at about 3 a.m. Saturday where I met what looked like a formidable line but thankfully I did not have to wait in it too long. Saw Timmy standing outside in the street watching the crowds eagerly waiting to enter into this magical experience as if we were his children making that prized journey across the stage at graduation. Before I even got in I was promptly told that access was restricted to the first floor only because the 2 other floors were too full! (I ignored this directive and proceeded to push my way up the flights of stairs until I was finally picked by the security guards on the steps to enter the realm of ecstasy on the 3rd floor.
Once on the 3rd floor I noticed that LLV was in control of the ship (and boy did he take us on a trip!) Then to top off his set he turns the helm over to Raul Midon. All I can say is dayum! That man is awesome!
I knew I wouldn't be able to really get off on the dance floor for several hours because of how packed it was but I did my thing in the corner until then.
All of the performances were on point. Ambrosia keep it real with her powerful testimony and Byron killed'um with those high pitched whales and his dance of joy rendition.
All of the DJ's were spectacular (Lil Ray really has a handle on that powerful Phazon too). They all dug in the crates and really demonstrated their immense diversity and depth.
I could literally go on for hours talking about this once in a life time, special, memorable, beautiful night but I am getting a little emotional so I'll cut it short. graemlins/mecry.gif
Some of the many highlights for me include:
The LOVE, ENERGY, RESPECT, FREEDOM, PEACE, JOY, AND FRIENDSHIP I experienced (and always experience there by the way).
Dancing for 14 hours (3:00 am- 5:00 pm) with very few breaks in between! (pumped up on Red Bull and Love).
Timmy's "speech" PRICELESS!
My personal conversation with Timmy (he is such an inspiration for me).
Joe Clausell simply devouring that organ track he made. Un-freakin-believable!
Meeting many of my DHP family including: Maria, Lil Ray, PK, Shalawa, Tenyu, Tony Cano, and TOT. "We are all sisters and brothers" (excerpt from the famous speech of Timmy Regisford).
Meeting soo many other beautiful people (especially the fine women!)
Seeing Timmy on the dance floor working it out. and Freddy chime in on the circle dance parade around the entire club...Unforgettable.
Thank you ALL graemlins/OLA.gif
Peace and Blessings

I should'a known Ray, this is definitely a record we love! I just didn't see ya papi, that ledge is a little high and makes it tough to see you, forgive me ;)

Clearly I must have left too early. I rolled up from Newport News, VA and got to the club (with my peeps) at 10:30pm so that we could the CD (which wasn't what I expected). We're there until 11am having exhausted our hopes for seeing Kenny Bobbien. So, here's my question.
WHO WAS THE EFF'ING SPECIAL GUEST???????????

graemlins/cussing.gif They were ALL special guest IMO. Raol Midon performed, and it was beautiful graemlins/thumbsup.gif . His name was not on the list of performers.

Sorry so late with this folk but my modem has beem down for a while. Now Im back on the internet highway with a new modem so, you'll be hearing from me mo often!
About that party which is an under statement.
What can I say about shelter's 12 years.
I can say I am proud to have been there from day one! No need to express the passed years to prove I was there.
I truely want to thank Freddy, Timmy, Robbi and the entire Shelter staff for hanging in there and giving us a place to call home.
All I can say that last Saturday was pure paradise. Meaning the energy from the time I arrived @ 6:30 am till 5pm was truly a precious time in my life. The place was tighly packed till about 3pm. I mean there was no where to dance. I saw every body doing a 1 1/2 step for hours, lol but true!
I change into summer gear as soon as I got there cause I knew the body heat was going to be crazy up stairs......And it was! Phooowww, good lord it was hotter then the devil's shit after eating jerk chicken with green Jamacan hot sauce!
To make a long post short I had a wonderfull time! I stayed till the very end as always..
It was great to see my house family enjoying a historical event.
All the DJ's did there thing. It was nice to see all of them leave their egos at home because we the people love them all!
Its moments like this that I will remember for the rest of my life..
One other random moment of wonderfully revelatory juiciness, Keith "I am grown now" Porter , managed to get by through all of the morning and most of the afternoon doing the DJ thing in and around the booth, bopping his head, tapping his toe and talking shop. It took Spinna's round two introduction of "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" to pull him to center flor but during the spoken introduction here comes Keith jogging to the center of the floor, pausing a moment to stretch and letting those moves go. That man can dance and it always pleases me to see him getting down.
Shalewa thanks for always noticing me and being a true friend. When I see you at parties I know im gonna have a good time. Still haven't made those dance classes but my time is coming!!!!
Im trying to get out more so I can dance more and detach myself from those cancer sticks... More dancing and less smokin!!!
Keith Porter, thank you for stopping me and saying hello.Leslie It was nice meeting you at the DHP NYC party last week. When I saw you at the Shelter I had to say hi! I couldn't just let you pass me by.
Big big big shout outs too:
Kervin Marks, TOT, Donna Edwards, Sting, Kim Campbell and friend, Kayo, Tony & Frank Cano,Mia & Ian Friday, Keita, Mike, serge, Kim Lightfoot, Herb Martin,Carlos Sanchez, PK, Nana Ataa,Donna Ward,Earon,Maria, Vicky and the crew(Uptown Baby),Anette, matthew j, to all the DHP family I didn't mention, FK,Spinna, Tyrone,Danny K, Lil RAY, Timmy R,Joe C, and the list goes on and on and on...
