I love a well-researched and written non-fiction book. Lately I've found a few "foodie books" that I'm drawn to. This seems to be a growing and healthy sub-genre. Here's a few I'm adding to my Amazon wish list.
The United States of Arugula: The Sun Dried, Cold Pressed, Dark Roasted, Extra Virgin Story of the American Food Revolution -by David Kamp (http://www.amazon.com/United-States-Arugula-American-Revolution/dp/0767915801/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-4788475-5384921?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185207110&sr=8-2)

Salt: A World History (http://www.amazon.com/Salt-World-History-Mark-Kurlansky/dp/0142001619/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4788475-5384921?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185208169&sr=1-1) (you could say this one is "foodie/historical" in subgenre) - Mark Kurlansky

A Hedonist in the Cellar: Adventures in Wine - Jay McInerney (http://www.amazon.com/Hedonist-Cellar-Adventures-Wine/dp/1400044820/ref=sr_1_3/102-4788475-5384921?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185207933&sr=1-3)

I do a lot of my food reading in German. Sanssoucci publish this excellent series of food & travel writing; recent editions have included Alsace, Tuscany, Ireland, Munich, Damascus, Trieste and Spain. I've collected or given away as presents all editions so far.

Love, sex and food. Unbeatable.

El Bulli 1998 - 2002; the third piece of a trilogy by the man himself - it's not so much a cook book as it is an exhibition catalogue. Costs a whopping $200 though!

I discovered Babette de Rozieres recently and by chance. The best creole and caribbean recipies I have seen in a while.

Dollase, ex-punk and rock musician, is the foremost German food philosopher. He teaches you how food works physically and chemically. I'm not sure wether any of his work has been translated into English.

I gave this book to my girl who absolutely devours books. She's not really enjoying this one. I don't think she took more than one bite.

I've been going thru my mothers old fanny farmer book from the 1920s...I love that thing!!
It's delicate and has not aged well, but I love nonetheless...
Vagaries of Taste by Diane Ackerman, anyone?
