Are vinyl going extinct??????
You know I ask myself this question many times. I start to think is it that time for me to change from vinyl to CD. I love the quality of vinyl on top of that I like to support the artists out there who create such great music out there by just buying the vinyl. This question arose from the beginning of the disappearence of great retail record stores such as Satellite Records and Dancetracks. I also know many plants are closing and distributors like Syntax and Unique are no longer in business. There are a very few retail stores out there still doing there thing like Tweekin and Downtown 304. Without these distributors many US labels are getting their vinyl overseas which will cost more money because they are imports. The one way for you to actually get the imports you want is to shop overseas such as Juno or Viny Junkies but we all know those of us still buying vinyl the shipping costs can be expensive. I started this thread to get feedback from those who still buy vinyl and do you think it's that time to switch and just download music? is this the only way to go what's going to happen in the future with House music being pressed on vinyl is it going to be tough luck for those who still buy vinyl because the closing of all these plant, stores, and distributors. I don't know about most of you but this is a pretty scary feeling..........

Yes, it won't be tomorrow, but they are leaving. Hell by the time we are elderly, paper books will not exist. As far as records, everything must evolve... Computers are the future for all areas of music and its production... Well they are the future for all areas of life. Hold on to those records though, they will be cool to show your grandkids... A Technic 1200 will look like a Grammaphone to them...

That maybe so.... still on the other hand vinyl is and will be a better quality sound if kept in good condtion and since they are now being pressed limited will be highly collectables let's face it who cares if you have it on a CD no one in the future will pay top dollar for a download.

Hey thats a pic of me! We gotta buy til there aint no more places to buy from. Im in the basement so the whole luggin crates around story doesnt apply.
With me its my cravin for music thats driving me digital. Ordering 8 records could easily run close to if not $100. Thats how many downloads?! Some stuff I must have in hand! Others I like but could live with out or it sounded good out but not at home and I wish I had DL'd it The other bad sad is I'm so late on new releases (unlike some of you claim to be) by time I get around to trying to buy it its out of print and DL is the only option. Getting the old stuff will always be there as for new its just a matter of time. Until then its us "dinosaurs" that keep it alive. |

Maybe it is, but it won't stop me from buying.
I still look for Vinyl first, then if I can't find it on vinyl, then I look for it on CD. my LAST resort is digital stores.
For people like me who still buy, collect, and spin with vinyl, it'll never be extinct. Somewhere somebody will always have a working apparatus to play records. So for that reason alone, I think Vinyl will always be around. The irony of it all is, the more the music business goes digital, the worse off it is in terms of making a profit. With illegal downloading and filesharing, it's almost like the digital revolution does a lot of damage. granted it makes things a lot easier, BUT it also makes things easier to pirate and/or steal. I'm not gonna sit here and play holier-than-thou. That would be pointless. Your question is a bout vinyl, so I'll try to stay on topic. Short answer, NO it's not going extinct... I think the vinyl format still has a few years left... __________________ http://www.myspace.com/djseanhaley http://www.myspace.com/windimotomusic http://www.windimoto.com "Life is what happens while you're waiting for moments that never come..."- Lester Freamon |

I agree with alot of the replies such as the expense on buying records they can be a bit pricey. I also agree that downloads are so much easier than carrying crates of records less bagage to carry. The thing is I don't think that most of you realize the seriousness behind the closing of many plants, distributors, and retail stores around the country. Many of you probably don't care and that's ok you have your reasons. I think the only way to support house music and it's producers is to buy the record not the download. Most of these are illegal to begin with. As for the comment by Disco2go I hope your right.

WOW such ignorance some people have on here. Maybe you didn't notice but have you thought I may be new to this site. I thought this was somewhere you can actually talk about certain things. The comment that was posted by AD is vey ignorant. AD you must not get enough love such hostility in you. I think you might have some serioue issue or problem with people saying things that might be on their mind. I opened this thread not knowing that this topic was once talked about before if I knew I wouldn't have bothered.

these threads are a headache.
BUT Myself and a friend played a party at his gallery spot on Saturday that was RIDICULOUS and I attribute the vibe we created somehwat to us playing almost entirely vinyl. There are vested emotions and energies in the records that are pulled to play and it just lets the "flow" happen so much easier when you are sticking to a bag of records... __________________ 2/12: Louie Vega & Anane @ Liv (DC) 2/17: Soulgasm w/ Brian Coxx @ Sin Sin (NYC) 2/20: "WILD NORTH" @ 411 NY Ave. NE Warehouse (DC) 3/12: Party Bros. @ Windup Space (Baltimore) 3/13: Dam Funk w/ Beautiful Swimmers @ 411 NY Ave. Warehouse (DC) 3/19: Chris Burns and Ron Trent present "BODY MUSIC" @ 411 NY Ave. (DC) www.ChrisBurnsDC.com http://myspace.com/chrisburnsdc |

Yea, ya'll is!! Big meanies. Not everyone thinks to do the "search" thingie - that would involve some sort of ... sense of a history on this page...the internet has no history. archive? what archive? Not thinking that such a topic might hv been touched on by people on a gigantic page dedicated to music...this are perfectly understandable!!

last night at my gig, the booth was right on the floor every one could see what I was doing, and people were buggin that I was playing records...
when I went to see the spot 2 nights before to see what I was working with the dj had something like serrato, with the laptop. I guess thats what people are use to seeing... I think its become quite obvious that vinyl is going extinct. There are a few tracks out now I really like and I want the vinyl but it doesnt exsist... almost every records store has closed... __________________ Your Opinion of me is really none of my business...
